How to Improve Your Mental Health

You ever feel overwhelmed by life? You ever let your environment control you? You ever go through an entire day without a smile? Stress is paralyzing; life gets hard; but the mind is strong. You’ve got to train yourself to power through.

I’m a mother of two boys, ages 3 and 6. I had kids late in life, enough said. And, I own a manufacturing business. Life is hectic; change was/is tough; and work never ends. Here are my tips on how to maintain emotional fitness:

Tip 1. Take Yourself Less Seriously

Don’t be the problem, be the solution. When you are “the problem” and take yourself too seriously, it can be hard to think straight. We all know that tight-jawed crank-pot who never laughs at anything. No fun there! Some things are clearly sad and not occasions for laughter. But most things in life fall into the ‘gray zone’ of ordinary life, giving you the choice to laugh or not. Choose to laugh. 

Tip 2. Use Humor to Overcome

Find ways to play in your daily life. The ability to laugh, play, and have fun not only makes life more enjoyable, it also clears the mind and allows you to be a better problem-solver. By incorporating some element of humor and play into my daily life, I feel renewed, lighter and more connected to the important people in my life.

Tip 3. Go to the Light Side

Find the humor in a bad situation; uncover the irony and absurdity of life. Laugh at yourself. Laugh instead of complain. This does wonders for my mood and the mood of those around me, namely, my poor husband. Surround yourself with reminders to lighten up. Keep a funny toy on your desk or in your car. Put up a funny poster in your office. Display funny photos of family and friends that make you laugh.

Many things in life are beyond our control, especially the behavior of other people. While you may think that taking-on the weight of the world is admirable, in the long run, you'll burn out. Humor and laughter takes you to a better place, where you live life from a more relaxed, positive, and balanced perspective. Go there. Trust me.
